I probably should have quit after the first one, but I didn't...

I told myself that I wasn't going to bother with this story since the first one was only ok for me. But, apparently I lied. I was poking around the internet yesterday and checking out new releases and there it was taunting me so I figured 'what the hell?' and picked it up to read.
Initially I was honestly regretting this move and I had no one to blame but myself. I was finding Maps to be even more annoying than he had been in the first book and I wasn't overly in love with any of the other characters either...this was not going well. Even Lane wasn't doing it for me...nope, it was going downhill. Slowly but still downhill...not good my friends not good at all. I wanted it to be better.
Honestly I probably would have thrown in the towel and called it a day but given that this story had less than 100 pages I decided that I just needed to 'suck it up' I mean really, I've read way, way worse and finished the story so that was the least I could do here.
By the time I got around the 70% mark I'd made up my mind to finish the story and never let anyone know I'd bothered to read it, but surprisingly somewhere around 80% things started to click and I found myself liking Lane again and...wait for it...seriously call the press...I started to really like Maps as well. Things didn't do a 360 for me but it was a solid turn for the better. I'm still not 100% sure whether or not I'll carry on with this series but indications are strong that I'll at least try the next story to see where things go for Lane and Maps.
This was probably only going to get 2.5 maybe 3 stars from me but thanks to the last part of the story and how much I liked it it's 3.5 stars because when an author can change how I'm feeling about a story that much in so few pages in my world that totally needs to be acknowledged.
